Mathew 13:44-52 In today's Gospel, we notice that Jesus begins with two very short but powerful parables. In the first, a man finds a hidden treasure in a field. In the second, a merchant finds a beautiful pearl. Both men do exactly the same thing. They sell everything they have because they know they have found something much more valuable. So today, through these parables, Jesus asks each one of us a simple but important question: What is the greatest treasure in our life? What do we value most? Is there something we consider precious that gives us real peace, joy, and contentment in life? There was once a wise monk who lived in a small wooden hut near a forest. He owned almost nothing. The only valuable thing he had was a beautiful golden bowl that someone had given him. One night, while the monk was praying, a thief quietly entered the hut, took the golden bowl, and ran away. The monk noticed the bowl was gone, but he did not panic. He did not run after the thief or become angry. Instead, he stepped outside, looked at the stars, and felt sorry for the thief. The thief, however, could not sleep that night. He was filled with fear, guilt, and had no peace. The next day, he returned to the monk with the golden bowl. He placed it at the monk's feet and began to cry. He said, "Please take your bowl back. I thought this gold would make me happy, but it has only filled me with fear. I could steal your bowl, but I could not steal your peace. Please teach me how to have a heart like yours." Here, the thief discovered something very important. The monk's greatest treasure was not the golden bowl. His real treasure was God. Because he trusted God, no one could steal his peace. That is exactly what Jesus is talking about in today's Gospel. The Pearl of Great Price is not a thing. It is a heart that belongs completely to God. When God becomes our greatest treasure, we discover a peace that no one can take away. When we look at our own lives, we notice that every day there are little things that steal our peace—a harsh word from someone, a family problem, an unexpected bill, bad news from the doctor, or a change in our plans. How quickly we become worried, angry, or discouraged. Today, Jesus invites us to make a different choice. He asks us to let go of whatever keeps us away from Him and to trust Him more deeply. That is what the two men in today's Gospel did. They sold everything to buy the pearl, and the thief in the story gave back the gold to find inner peace and joy. So today, let us ask ourselves: What am I holding on to that is taking away my peace and keeping me away from God? Let us ask Jesus to help us let go of those things and hold on to the greatest treasure of all—His love, His grace, and His peace. Amen.
